Error: "The RPC server is unavailable" when provisioning a certificate to an IIS application

When provisioning a certificate to an IIS application, the following error is displayed at stage 800:

Install Certificate failed with error: The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)

This error is displayed because the Venafi Director server is unable to reach the IIS server using the DCOM protocol.

Ensure that the firewalls are configured to allow communication using DCOM on port 135 from the Director server to the IIS server.  Additionally ports 49152-65535/tcp may be used for the DCOM communications, though they can be constrained through steps outlined in Microsoft KB154596

Ensure your DNS settings are correct and the remote address does resolve from the Director server.

NOTE: For a complete listing of all the ports required for the successful operation of  Director, see https://support.venafi.com/entries/21123988
